John “Jack” D. Powell, 84, of Langdon Place, Keene, N.H. died Thursday evening (4-17-2014) at Langdon Place surrounded by his family.
He was born in Philadelphia, PA on March 31, 1930 the son of Edward M. and Emma (Fitt) Powell. He was the great-grandson of D.L. Moody, founder of Northfield Mt. Hermon School. Jack graduated from Mt. Hermon School in 1948. He then attended Colby College, earning his bachelor’s degree in 1955. He then received Master’s Degrees from Springfield College and Western Reserve University.
He served three years in the United States Air Force as an Aircraft Control Tower operator. His professional career included Cleveland Heights, OH, YMCA secretary, then serving as principal of elementary schools in East Cleveland, Newbury Township and West Geauga schools all in Ohio. In retirement he taught at Central Carolina Community College in Sanford, NC.
He is survived by his wife the former Gloria Wood, and two sons: Stephen and his wife Mary Ellen of Keene, NH and Thomas and his wife Susan of Columbus, OH. He is also survived by his grandchildren: John Robert, Jessica and her husband Greg Coale, and Sally and Thomas Jr. and a great-grandson, Parker Coale. He also leaves his twin brother David and his wife Lucia of Cheshire, CT.
A memorial service will be held next Monday (4-28-2014) at the Trinitarian Congregational Church, 147 Main St. Northfield, MA at 11 a.m. The Rev. Dr. Christine Fontaine, interim pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Pentecost Cemetery, Northfield, MA. A reception will follow in Fellowship Hall of the church immediately following the burial.
